After leaving Little John at the sanctuary, the Biscuits stepped into a nearby tavern to discuss their options.

Gimar So, this restoration, is there a recovery time?
Nicola None that I know of.
Wed I have heard it is quite costly.
Jaron Bah! Our purses have too much coin anyhow . . .
Rheaphlyndar (indignantly) Speak for yourself!
Wed No, I mean in years.
Nicola Ah, that's right, I remember now. Little John could end up quite a bit older when this is done. If you'll all excuse me, I'll go check up on our warrior.
Knight (bumping into Jaron) Hey, you, er, your paladinship. Say, your group isn't here with the Knights of the Hart, are they?
Jaron No, good sir.
Knight Well that's lucky for you, then.
Gimar Why would that be, sir knight?
Knight Derrek's the name. It seems a bunch of those knights arrived earlier this week, with a message from his lairdship, King Belvor.
Gimar (quite curious now) Please go on.
Derrek (pulling on his beer) Well, we don't know for sure, but the rumour going around these parts is that King Belvor means to annex Verbobonc and Dyvers.
Jaron Has the Magister made any proclamations one way or the other?
Derrek No, but there is a meeting of the Gentry next week. Oh, pardon me, I must be going. Cold Iron avail you.
Jaron And you, sir knight.

After the knight ambled out the door, Gimar turned to Jaron.

Gimar Is a mage in charge of the government here?
Jaron No, no, nothing like that. Magister is the title given to the mayor, although it is somewhat of a figurehead position. Real power rests with the Gentry council.

Jaron then excused himself to go and visit the Keoish ambassador. After another round of beverages and a fresh platter of meats, Nicola returned with the news.

Nicola High Priest Barmanos Sarnfar is considering Little John's case.
Gimar Well that sounds good. Is he quite capable?
Nicola He is know around here as a healer of men, a leader in battle, a destroyer of darkness, and a protector of goodness.
Dollin (obviously impressed) I should think he would be up to the task.

Time early evening

Jaron reached the ambassador's office just as it was closing, and he was invited to dinner. He graciously accepted, and the two of them went down to Sails, a fine restaurant with a view of the water. Shortly they were joined by the Herald of the Western Gate.

Cyrus Harthorne Ambassador Boyd, it is a pleasure to see you again.
Boyd Always room at the table here. May I introduce Jaron Yhanovaar of Pelor.
Harthorne (bowing low) Pleased to make your acquaintence, sir Paladin.

After the first beverages and appetizers arrived, the conversation turned to the recent political events. Jaron listened with some interest.

Harthorne I see only a slim likelyhood that the Knights of the Hart would actually follow through on such a plan.
Boyd Margus is a weak-willed fool. I'll wager he would buy into this hook, line and sinker.
Harthorne You know as well as I that the Gentry wouldn't allow anything like that to happen. However, I can make a few inquiries about your rumour.
Boyd I shall be very interested in what you find. If you gentlemen would excuse me, nature calls.
Harthorne (as the Ambassador was leaving) So, young Jaron, how do find our fair city?
Jaron I have only been through it twice now. It does seem to be a city of industrious citizens who have a good work ethic.
Harthorne (smiling) Yes, I would agree with that assessment. Now that the ambassador has gone, I have something else to discuss with you.
Jaron (surprised) Sir?
Harthorne I had quite an interesting dream last night, involving a certain paladin wielding a certain broadsword known as Scather. I see that particular weapon there on your belt and deduced that it must be you.
Jaron (cautiously) I hope the dream was favorable.
Harthorne (chuckling) Oh, quite. Anyhow, it seems I am fated to give you this. I can tell you no more; prayer will have to provide your answers.

The half-elven warrior-bard handed Jaron a small sealed platinum urn, of the type used to hold the ashes of the deceased. An engraving of a magnificent warhorse was visible on one side.

Little John was just finishing up his meeting with the high priest of Pelor in the region, one Barmanos Sarnfar.

Barmanos Sarnfar So you see, that is my price.
Little John I will inform the others of my party. I suspect they shall say no, since we are on a vital quest.
Barmanos Sarnfar And you say that all this was originally because of a dream and a woman?
Little John Maybe I'll live so long that I'll forget her. Maybe I'll die trying.
Barmanos Sarnfar You must go where your heart leads you. I have some appointments in the morning, but I will be available by midday.
Little John Thank you.
Barmanos Sarnfar Advice is always free, my friend.

The Biscuits gathered late in the evening at the One-Eyed Mug and compared notes. Gimar looked quite happy with his imperial tankard of earthwine.

Little John The high Peloran priest, Barmanos Sarnfar, can perform the spell but he requires that we go on a minor quest.
Nicola For the good of Pelor?
Little John As I understand it. If we accept, we must travel to Critwall and attempt to contact the High Priest of the temple. We must also bring back a Peloran relic, to prevent it's falling into the hands of the forces of Iuz.
Gimar Isn't Critwall an occupied city?
Dollin Yeah, up in the former Shield lands, that's right.
Little John I am afraid that this quest could distract us from the King's quest, perhaps for too long. I have talked at great length with the high priest who assures me that I can continue to improve on my skills and, in time, surpass my former level. So please, let's not make a decision only on my account.
Rheaphlyndar We aren't due in Irongate for some time yet. Is there any treasure in this former temple?
Jaron (glowering) You must mean outside treasure, since the items in this church belong to Pelor.
Rheaphlyndar Well of course, that's exactly what I meant . . .
